It seems subscribers will now be paying double for telecoms services, as plans are in progress by
MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9Mobile to review the price of data and call tariff. Our telecom operators' are demanding for
100% increase in prices of data and voice calls, and this might take effect if the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) shows them the green light.
Reports from Dailytrust disclosed that an insider with the industry regulator, who craved anonymity, said the
telecom operators had been making a case for price increment of data and call services since the first quarter of this year.
Compared to previous years, nowadays, most consumers spends less on telecommunication services, due to presence of WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, etc. This majorly decreased the number of voice calls users, and the
telecoms once threatened to block such OTT platforms.
In the last 10 years, a drastic reduction had been recorded in call and data tariffs. On-Net and Off-Net per minute tariffs which now stand at
N12.01k and N12.64 respectively used to be
N24 and N75.30k. So, If NCC agree to the terms our telecommunication providers, we subscribers will now pay close to
N24 per minute and about
N2,000 for one gigabyte of data per month.
Telecoms are putting the blame on rising cost of production and high usage of OTT services, complaining that they could no longer carry on with current call and data prices.
